Cannulation in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

چکیده
We sincerely appreciate the studies performed about mobilization in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients [1]. An increasing number of studies can be seen recently in this very challenging group of patients. Mobilizing an ECMO patient is a complicated task to due to surrounding equipment and the nature of cannulations [2,3]. Regarding postoperative mobilization, the most comfortable side for cannulation is the subclavian artery/femoral vein, as indicated by Abrams and colleagues [1]. There is no significant contraindication to mobilize patients with femoral arterial/venous cannulation but the procedure should be slightly difficult, as Abrams and colleagues stated. The question here is whether we should place the cannulae considering the possibility of postoperative mobilization. Does this possibility really have to affect our choice of cannulation side? ECMO is a life-saving tool although it comes with many different complications, including cannulation-related bleeding, ischemia of ipsilateral extremity, vascular injury

Cannulation for Neonatal and Pediatric Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Cardiac Support
The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has increased over recent years providing respiratory and cardiac support. Optimal cannula placement is essential for successful patient outcomes. Multiple cannulation strategies may be employed depending on the age/weight of the patient and their underlying condition. This article discusses cannulation technique focusing on the cannulation ...

OBJECTIVES To report on survival from a large multicenter cohort of neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation-assisted cardiopulmonary resuscitation after stage 1 palliation operation. DESIGN Retrospective analysis of data from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization data registry (1998 through 2013). We computed the survival to hospital ...

INTRODUCTION This observational report depicts typical problems of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation from a large case series of a single center. METHODS We analysed our experience with 720 consecutive patients receiving veno-venous or veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation focusing on the spectrum of complications occurring in a subset of 159 patients treated with pe...
متن کاملComplication of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation – the significance of an inferior vena cava anomaly
Physicians should be aware of possible anatomical variants during cannulation for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Particular attention to ensure continual visualization of the guidewire before proceeding to final positioning of the ECMO cannulae should be paid. Alternative imaging modalities should be contemplated when uncertainties arise to minimize the risk of inadvertent vascular...
متن کاملSide-arm grafts for femoral extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation.
Lower extremity ischemia is an important source of morbidity with femoral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. We describe our experience with the use of a side-arm graft sewn to the femoral artery that facilitates adequate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation flow while preventing lower extremity ischemia.
متن کاملPreparation and technical considerations for percutaneous cannulation for veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
BACKGROUND The most frequent limb complications from peripheral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) are limb ischemia and localized bleeding. To minimize these risks, perfusion of the distal limb with peripheral percutaneous cannulation was done. TECHNIQUE Percutaneous cannulation with a distal perfusion port was performed in all patients. During the VA-ECMO, distal li...
